Copyright Act 1994

When people create something original, such as a photo, video, song, website or computer program, they may have rights over that work. In New Zealand, copyright is mainly covered by the Copyright Act 1994

What is Copyright?

Copyright helps protect original creative work from being copied or used without permission. It can apply to many types of work, including:
* Photos and images
* Videos and films
* Music and sound recordings
* Books and written work
* Websites and computer programs
* Drawings and other creative work

Copyright usually belongs to the creator or the person who legally owns the rights to the work.

Copyright and IT

Copyright is important in the IT industry because websites and digital applications often use different types of content.
For example, an IT professional might use images, graphics, videos, text or software when creating a website.
They should check whether they have permission or the correct licence before using someone else’s work.
Copying or sharing protected work without permission can lead to copyright problems.

Fair Use of Copyrighted Work

There are some situations where copyrighted material may be used without getting permission, depending on the circumstances. The law has exceptions for areas such as research, private study, criticism, review, news reporting and education.However, this does not mean that everything found online can be freely copied. It is important to check the rules before using someone else’s work.

Māori Knowledge and Culture

Copyright can also be relevant to mātauranga Māori and Māori cultural works. Some forms of Māori knowledge and cultural expression may not fit easily into normal copyright rules because they can be shared and developed by communities over many generations.
IT professionals should therefore be respectful when using Māori language, designs, images, stories or other cultural material.
Why Copyright Matters-
Copyright encourages people to create new work and helps protect their creative efforts. For IT professionals, understanding copyright helps them avoid using other people’s work incorrectly and encourages responsible use of digital content.
